Just in from Canon:
"This is a courtesy e-mail to inform you that firmware upgrade 2.0.3 for the EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR Camera will be coming in March of 2010. 2.0.3 meets the demands of both professional movie producers and aspiring filmmakers alike by adding 24p video acquisition and changing the 30p video frame rate to 29.97 to comply with TV production standards. In addition, audio capability is enhanced for professional use, adding manual audio level control, and increasing the audio sampling frequency to 48KHz from 44.1KHz."

| | 03/06/2010 | | Changing 30 fps to 29.97 fps! What a bunch of knuckleheads. They should have simply added the option to have either 29.97 or 30 fps. Some people want 30 fps for web production and don't give a hoot about archaic TV standards! |
| | 03/03/2010 | | Extreme shallow depth of field is not always desirable, and with a 5DMKII you really need a focus puller who's good and most of the time have to shoot at at least an f4 to just keep things in focus. The chip of the 7D is about the same size as Academy 4-perm 35mm film and focus pulling is very similar, ie., not so extreme. Best to try out both cameras if you can before spending money, and consider all the types of shooting you do. With my 7D I often have to shoot at 320 ISO just to keep enough depth of field for the action to stay in focus. Nothing wrong with the 5DMKII, just be aware of all the advantages and disadvantages of both cameras before jumping into anything. If you come from a "prosumer" camera background and have never shot film before, it's easy to think you want a more shallow depth of field than what you'll really want when you get on the set. |
| | 03/02/2010 | | What a silly thing to say. $800 more (based on MSRP) and you get a sensor that is equal to a film camera (60% more than the 7D). They each have their strengths but when I found out that the 7D had a smaller sensor, I lost my interest.
Just think what you can do with DoF on the 5D |
| | 03/02/2010 | | BIG DEAL! WHere's the 60p SLO-MO you get already on the 7D!
Maybe you need to put in a second RISC too.
Why spend so much more for a camera that does so much less than a camera that costs a lot less. Get it together CAnon. |
