At last year’s Digital Video Expo,
one of the greatest successes of the entire event was the series of
four Master Classes In Lighting sessions organized by award-winning
director of photography George Spiro Dibie, ASC. Class Masters: Clockwise, from top, left: ASC fellows Dibie, Mankofsky, Morgan, Darbey, Jensen, Lenoir, Pearl, Schaefer and Goi.
Each of Dibie's four 90-minute Master Class “show-and-tell”-style sessions consisted of a panel of top
cinematographers hand picked from the ranks of the American Society of Cinematographers, who screened clips of their work, discussed their
lighting approach and then took questions from DVE attendees.
This year, for Digital Video Expo 2009, Dibie has plotted out an entirely new program of ASC speakers to discuss the art of lighting, including: Richard Crudo, Michael Negrin, Robert Primes, Nancy Schreiber, Daniel Pearl, Johnny E. Jensen, Isidore Mankofsky, Don M. Morgan, David Darbey, Denis Lenoir, Roberto Schaefer and Anthony R. Palmieri, and Michael Goi, who is the current President of the ASC.* These sessions will be held September 23 and 24 in the DVE Center Stage area just off the Expo show floor.
"The quality of the lighting is one of the key distinctions between competent camerawork and fine cinematography, regardless of your recording device, whether is be film or digital, HD or SD," says DV magazine editor David E. Williams, who is also the Digital Video Expo Conference Chair. "All of these directors of photography are experienced veterans who have been faced with every possible lighting scenario, from immense sets to intimate portraiture. And anyone who is seeking to improve their own images would do well to sit in on each of the Master Classes in Lighting sessions, which are absolutely FREE to all registered Expo attendees."
