RED Feature “Heist” Posted on Avid at Kappa Studios
October 24, 2008

Burbank, California-based Kappa Studios, Inc. is completing digital intermediate (DI) work and a Dolby 5.1 surround mix for "Heist," a theatrical feature shot on the revolutionary new RED One digital camera. "Heist" is the first RED-originated feature film completely posted on Avid.

In addition to Avid's RED workflow, Kappa's DI Supervisor Igor Ridanovic has developed a proprietary software tool for RED postproduction. Kappa is also a beta tester for Monkey Extract software application. Digital Intermediate Colorist Eric Babinec is using the latest Avid DS v10 for color grading.

"Heist" film Editor Drake Silliman, ACE made a decision to edit in Avid Media Composer due to his years of experience cutting with Avid products. The technical staff at Kappa Studios made the transition to working with RED media on Avid completely transparent. Silliman says, “Using RED files in Avid was flawless and as fast as any project I’ve edited.”

In this suspense-thriller filmed in Atlanta and Los Angeles, a troubled man convinces his estranged brother to rob an armored truck in broad daylight on a busy Los Angeles street corner. This is the first of several bad ideas that drive the plot.

Leading man Rick Jordan shared directorial duties with Richard Cooper on the Wayne Wong-produced picture for EBS World Entertainment.

The idea to shoot RED came from DP Grisha Alasadi, who had already shot several projects with RED One and suggested using it for “Heist”. The benefit-to-cost ratio, plus the ability to record a 4K image with film-like imagery quickly persuaded all involved that RED was the right choice.

Kappa Studios is a full-service high definition postproduction facility located in the Media District of Burbank, California. Kappa provides complete television post and digital cinema picture and sound services, hosts the RED User Group, RED Boot Camp, and provides free consultations to producers. Kappa Studios works with each client to create a postproduction package that fits each unique project and budget — an end-to-end service chain geared for television and film production.
